Today is launch day for Windows 7 around the world. And, being both an Apple and Windows user, I was looking forward to installing it on my early 2006 Intel iMac… but whoa… not so fast there you renegade you… Apple has said, in this support document, that they will be supporting Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate “before the end of the year” if your running Snow Leopard. But the document goes on to list several models that Apple will not be supporting. Note: The following models will not be supported for use with Windows 7 using Boot Camp. iMac (17-inch, Early 2006) iMac (17-inch, Late 2006) iMac (20-inch, Early 2006) iMac (20-inch, Late 2006) MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2006) MacBook Pro (17-inch, Late 2006) MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2006) MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2006) Mac Pro (Mid 2006, Intel Xeon Dual-core 2.66GHz or 3GHz) According to an article from PCWorld the author, David Chartier, has been running the Windows 7 Release Candidate on his ‘Early 2006 Mac Pro for some time now and, aside from it occasionally waking from sleep for no reason, it generally works fine.’ So maybe I’ll be able to run it on my iMac as well, albeit without direct support from Apple. Chartier suspects as to why Apple is not supporting Windows 7 on these machines – ‘Exactly why these models will not be supported is unclear, though the obvious assumption is that Apple decided not to support some piece of hardware, perhaps some kind of logic-board controller, specific to these models.’
